Follow the historic Pilgrim’s Path across Dovrefjell, hiking through open mountain landscapes between Gudbrandsdalen and the Dovrefjell highlands. The route combines the history of St. Olav’s Way with varied mountain scenery and the opportunity to see wildlife such as musk oxen and wild reindeer.
From Gudbrandsdalen Across Dovrefjell
The journey starts in Toftemo in Gudbrandsdalen, with a short transfer to Budsjord Farm, a historic farm along the Pilgrim’s Path.
From here, hike north across the mountains towards Furuhauglie, Hjerkinn and Kongsvold Fjeldstue. The route passes through open highland terrain, valleys and mountain landscapes, with views towards Snøhetta along the way.
Dovrefjell is known for its wildlife, and with some luck you may see musk oxen or wild reindeer.
Self-Guided Hiking with Luggage Transfer
You hike independently at your own pace, with your luggage transferred between accommodations. Daily stages are approximately 12–20 km, so a good level of fitness and previous mountain hiking experience are recommended.
Your overnight stays are a comfortable part of the journey, with private rooms, private bathrooms and dinner included at each accommodation.

The Pilgrim’s Path across Dovrefjell has been used for centuries as part of the route to Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Today, you can experience this historic trail independently while enjoying the mountain landscape and letting us take care of the practical details.
Hike the Pilgrim`s Path with Discover Norway!
Since the marking of the Pilgrim's Path began in 1994, more than 500 kilometers of trails through Denmark, Sweden, and Norway have been marked with the pilgrim logo. The logo along the Pilgrim's Path is easy to recognize. It combines the landmark symbol, the valknut, with a form of the Cross of St. Olav. The logo is trademarked and managed by the National Pilgrim Center (NPS), which also coordinates and develops the Pilgrim's Path – St. Olav's Ways to Trondheim.
All approved St. Olav's Ways must have Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim as the destination and be linked to the history of St. Olav. The Pilgrim's Path through Denmark, Sweden, and Norway attained the status of a European Cultural Route through the Council of Europe's cultural routes program in May 2010.

You can add a day at Hjerkinn (NOK 2050 per person in a dbl room incl meals) and discover what Dovrefjell has to offer

- Bus to Snøheim Lodge and hike the summit of Snøhetta.
- Join a guided Musk Ox Safari
- Horseback riding in the mountains with a guide, arranged by Hjerkinn Fjellstue
- Visit Viewpoint SNØHETTA and the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Center at Hjerkinn
It is possible to extend your trip and take the Rauma Railway to the mountaineering capital in Norway, Åndalsnes. Here you will find Trollstigen, the Romsdal Gondola, the Romsdalseggen Ridge, Rampestreken and a Via Ferrata. Please contact us for a quote on accommodation, train tickets and activity suggestions.
We found the hiking trip very special. It was such a beautiful area, very diverse also in terms of plants, trees, dry, wet, rivers, and the view on the mountains.
It was interesting to read all the information about the history of the path along the way, and we met nice people who were walking to Trondheim.
