Cycling the Helgeland Coast

Arrival Brønnøysund. Bike trip to Torghatten.

Welcome to the coastal town, Brønnøysund. The easiest way to travel here is by plane.

Bike Vega - Seløy.

The express boat that takes you from Vega to Herøy is a great experience and you get to see more of the Helgeland archipelago. On Herøy, you have many nice options to bike in different directions. The landscape is perfect for cycling with flat islands that are connected by countless bridges, with the contrast of the towering mountain, Dønnamannen, in the horizon.

We recommend starting the journey south to the southern tip of Herøy, before turning north towards the flower shop Etcetera – a charming oasis of colors and scents. From Etcetera, we can continue northwest towards Seløya Island where we find our accommodation.

There is also time for a hike to mount Åkvikfjellet before dinner.

Bike Seløy - Sandnessjøen.

After breakfast we bike to Dønna where we take the ferry to the mainland. Today's route offers spectacular natural experiences with panoramic views of The Seven Sisters rising in the east, Dønnamannen towering in the north, and Lovund beautifully situated on the horizon to the west.

When we arrive Sandnessjøen, we set course for the Helgeland Bridge, one of Helgeland's most photographed landmarks. We cross the bridge and get an amazing view.

On our way back to Sandnessjøen, we also make a stop at one of 34 monuments in the Artscape Nordland. From here, we continue towards the town and are also guaranteed to have an encounter with a moose! At least one in the form of a statue at the entrance to Sandnessjøen, which tells us that we find one of the largest populations of moose in Nordland here.

Bike Sandnessjøen - Forvik.

Easy cycling parallel to the mountain range, the Seven Sisters. Approximately 20 km after Sandnessjøen you will see the Petter Dass Museum at Alstahaug. We recommend stopping here for a guided tour. The museum provides an exciting insight into the life and work of the poet-priest Petter Dass, while the church offers beautiful architecture and a strong connection to the region's history.

You continue from one island to the next on a narrow strip of land to Tjøtta. The International War Cemetery at Tjøtta may be an interesting stop as well. Ferry from Tjøtta to Forvik. At the ferry quay in Forvik we visit the coffee roastery at the old trading post.

Accommodation in authentic surroundings at Forvik Old Trading Post or Vevelstad Guesthouse (shared bathroom / WC). In the evening you are served a meal which is included in the package. You will be served the Boknafisk, a speciality in Northern Norway. 

Bike Forvik - Brønnøysund.

The route from Forvik to the ferry in Andalsvåg follows a strip of land between the sea and the mountains on the mainland. Ferry to Horn. On the way to Brønnøysund, you pass Hildurs Urterarium (Herb Garden), where you can buy lunch (21 June - 16 August) and walk around in the beautiful garden.

The trip ends in Brønnøysund. Agree with the tourleader how this last leg is carried out, and where/when to pick up your luggage. You will be back in Brønnøysund at about 14:30.
