Travel Tips – Welcome to Discover Norway
Welcome to Travel Tips, our space for inspiration, practical advice and honest insight into travelling in Norway. Here we will share tips from our own experiences, guidance on choosing the right trip, advice about seasons and weather, packing recommendations, and ideas for how to get the most out of your time in this beautiful (and sometimes challenging) country.
Before we dive into specific tips, we would like to properly introduce ourselves.
Who We Are
Discover Norway has been creating and selling cycling, hiking and ski tours with luggage transport in Norway for more than 27 years. We are a small team of three passionate travel professionals, based in Lillehammer – the Olympic city, surrounded by forests, mountains and some of Norway’s best winter terrain.
Even though our office is in Lillehammer, we design and operate tours all over Norway – from the coast to the high mountains, and from the south to the far north.
We love Norwegian nature, and our goal is simple: to help more people experience how diverse and beautiful Norway truly is.

Our Travel Philosophy
Our favourite travel format is self-guided tours with luggage transport. This gives you the freedom to travel at your own pace, while we take care of the logistics behind the scenes. In addition to self-guided trips, we also offer guided experiences at selected times and destinations, and we continuously expand our portfolio.
We handle:
-
Accommodation bookings
-
Luggage transfers
-
Route descriptions and maps
-
Activity planning
-
Transport bookings/advice
-
Equipment rental (bikes, skis, etc.)
You can relax knowing that we are available to answer questions before your trip, during the planning phase, and if anything unexpected happens while you are travelling.
After a day outdoors, comfort matters. Our tours include ready-made beds and dinner served on arrival, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience without worrying about practicalities.

Understanding Norway: Distances, Seasons and Logistics
It is possible to travel using trains, buses, ferries, express boats and domestic flights.
However, there are large seasonal variations in schedules, and some mountain roads are closed during winter. Norway also has more airports than you might expect for its population size, making flights a practical option for longer distances.
Our experience shows that it is often better to stay several nights in one place rather than rushing from destination to destination. This allows you to truly experience what an area has to offer.

Choosing the Right Time to Travel
Yes, July is popular – but it is far from the only great time to travel.
-
Spring brings blooming valleys, powerful waterfalls from snowmelt, fresh green landscapes and snow-covered mountain peaks.
-
Summer offers long days, mild temperatures and endless hiking and cycling opportunities.
-
Autumn is filled with vibrant colours, crisp air and fewer visitors.
-
Winter delivers snow-covered landscapes, skiing, and quiet wilderness.
Some destinations in Norway have gained a reputation for overtourism during peak season, but Norway is vast. With the right timing and location, it is still possible to experience peace, space and solitude.

Where to Go in Norway
Northern Norway – dramatic coastlines, midnight sun, northern lights and Arctic landscapes.
Western Norway – fjords, waterfalls, glaciers and iconic mountain scenery.
Eastern Norway – forests, rolling hills, gentle hiking terrain, cultural landscapes and easy access from Oslo. This is also where you find some of the worlds best cross-country ski trails during the winter months.
Southern Norway – coastal scenery, charming towns and a milder climate.
Each region offers different experiences, and we are happy to help you find the right match for your interests and travel style.

Planning Your Trip to Norway
When choosing where and when to travel, it helps to think about what you want to experience. Do you want dramatic fjords, quiet mountain plateaus, coastal scenery or Arctic landscapes? Would you prefer lively destinations during peak season, or calmer places with more space and fewer visitors? Would you like to hike steep mountains, walk in gentle terrain, or bike in the mountains or along the coast?
Before your trip, we provide detailed route descriptions, packing lists, suggestions for activities, and points of interest along the way. We take care of the logistics so you can focus on enjoying the journey, the landscapes, and the freedom to travel at your own pace.
Please note that we do not include flights in our tour packages, but we are happy to advise on the best way to reach your destination.
