Jotunheimen - Snowshoeing with guide

Status:
This tour is on request, please contact us for information and booking

Norway’s nature enchants with its beauty, especially in winter. The region around Jotunheimen National Park with its vast tablelands and bizarre, bold rolling mountain ranges offers unlimited fun for those who fancy outdoor activities. To enjoy the winter in peace and quiet, to feel safe in the pristine, white-sparkling landscape – all this makes snowshoeing so attractive.
Hindsæter has well marked trails in the wilderness, for everyone. Experience fresh mountain air and a silence rarely found in Europe and meet one of the largest forest animals, the elk. In February and March there is a good chance to see them. You can also look forward to a ice hike through the Sjoa Gorge, sledging fun and the daily sauna session.

The small historic Hindsæter Hotel, built in 1898, has a stunning view over the valley and Jotunheimen National Park. Hindsæter is a relaxing getaway, with exceptional opportunities right at the doorste. We also promise you some extraordinary food experiences. Since 2010 the hotel restaurant is listed by Innovation Norway as a good place to eat local food.

This is simply a week of pure enjoyment.

Day by day program

Day 1 - Saturday: Arrival.
Transfer by train from Oslo Airport Gardermoen at 14.29. Arrival in Otta at 17.33. Hotel transfer to Hindsæter.
The historic Hindseter hotel is situated on the outskirts of the famous Jotunheimen National Park. The area is extremely sparsely populated (approx. 10 inhabitants / square km). You will be served a welcome drink at the open fireplace - enjoy it together with the hosts André and Karola.

Day 2 - Sunday: Hindseterkampen Mountain and Veojuvet Gorge
Snowshoeing above the tree line, from where you will be able to enjoy the valley with its birch and pine forests. Hindseterkampen Mountain offers a fantastic panoramic view.
You will get adjusted to the snowshoeing and try different techniques like soft sliding and minor jumps.

Day 3 - Monday: To Stuttgongkampen Mountain (1418 m)
Snowshoe tour up from the hotel through a spellbound birch forest. You will climb to the main summit via a pre-summit which will already reveal much of the panorama. From the main summit, you will have a 360 degrees view over the entire Sjoa valley.

Day 4 - Tuesday: Hike to the Steinholet Mountain Range
The track follows the moose tracks at Steinholet. Today, the deep snow in the pine forest is waiting for you. You will be in the area where hundreds of moose are seeking shelter every winter. Binoculars will help you spot some at a distance. If you are lucky you will also see them close. A rest at a camp fire before you continue your hike and go a large arch to get back to the hotel.

Day 5 - Wednesday: Besstrond Rundhø Mountain (1421 m)
After a short bus trip, you put on your snowshoes and stroll through a snow-covered forest where you can marvel at lots of very old pinewood forests. You continue through a ravine and several pre-summits, to reach the Peak of Besstrond Rundhø Mountain at 1421 m. Heading back, you stroll through the powder snow to Bessheim mountain restaurant where you will indulge with some refreshments before heading back to the hotel.

Day 6 - Thursday: Ice Hike through Sjoa Gorge
The ice hike through Sjoa gorge is an extraordinary tour in a dramatic landscape with unique ice formations. This scenic hike will take you to a seemingly unreal gorge where the ice has created a very much out-of-the world scenery in blue, green, and yellow. Ice caves, ice skids and giant washed-out river basins form an adventure landscape.
In the evening, you are invited to enjoy some sledge fun and hot Norwegian gløgg at the slopes in front of the hotel.

Day 7 - Friday: High-mountain Tour to Hindflya High Plain, 1500 m
After the first ascent with 300 height metres, you will arrive to Hindflya with its white vastness. The wind has left all sorts of forms and patterns in the snow. The peaks of the Hindnubben mountain chain will be towering in front of you. On your way back to Hindsæter, you descend through the Hinde gorge.

Day 8 - Saturday: Departure day.
Departure after breakfast.
Hotel transfer from Hindsæter. Transfer by train from Otta at 11.29. Arrival at Oslo Airport Gardermoen at 14.32.
