The North Sea Cycle Route

Arrival in Sandnes

- Arrive by plane to Stavanger Airport (Sola)
- Arrive by train from Kristiansand or Oslo
- Arrive by ferry from Bergen.

We recommend spending some time in Stavanger when you are in the region.
The train between Sandnes and Stavanger takes about 15 minutes.

Bike from Sandnes to Egersund (79 km)

This stretch offers a wide range of natural experiences. The stage begins on somewhat busy roads as you leave the center of Sandnes, but you soon switch to pedestrian and cycle paths before heading out onto Jæren. Here you’ll encounter a varied landscape of open fields, vibrant farmland, and beautiful beaches known for both surfing and swimming. It’s well worth taking a break to visit Varhaug Old Churchyard and Hå Old Vicarage.

From the beaches at Jæren, the route continues along the scenic 'Gamle Vestlandske Hovedvei (Old Westland Main Road)' through hilly mountain landscapes, before finishing on the Old Jæren Railway Line.

Bike from Egersund to Sogndalstrand (33 km)

Today’s stage takes you through a fascinating landscape of heather-covered rocky outcrops and small lakes. There are some uphill sections, with the highest point at about 140 meters above sea level. In general, the route features many small climbs followed by corresponding descents. You will notice some traffic during the first half of the stage, before the route turns onto a quieter local road.

Finally, the day ends in the idyllic and historic village of Sogndalstrand.

Bike from Sokndalstrand to Flekkefjord (40 km)

Today’s stage is a challenging one, taking you through a spectacular landscape of mountains, fjords, and lakes.

The main route has plenty of climbs and descents (0 - 280 m elevation difference), some of them quite steep. You will especially notice the uphill stretches from Hauge, Jøssingfjord, and Åna Sira. On the downhill towards Jøssingfjord, you can take a break at the unique Tunnelstuo. In Jøssingfjord, you may also visit the Science Museum and walk over to the famous Helleren.

If you need to recharge your e-bike, you can stop by the local shop (Joker) in Åna Sira.

Bike from Flekkefjord to Farsund (79 km)

A long and very demanding stage with several tough climbs. There are two short stretches along the E39. The first climb comes shortly after leaving Flekkefjord. You will also face some long and challenging ascents before and after Liknes in Kvinesdal. In Liknes, it is possible to ask for charging facilities for e-bikes.
After reaching Steinsheia (240 m.a.s.l.), you descend toward Lista and continue through fertile farmland. A bit further on, our route diverts from National Cycle Route 1 to shorten the stage somewhat. The route then turns toward Vanse and the “American Lista.” From there, it’s easy cycling across Lista in the direction of Farsund.

Bike from Farsund to Mandal (65 km)

Today’s stage is a rollercoaster ride with plenty of twists, turns, and ups and downs. There are a couple of tough ascents before and after Lyngdal. Around every bend, a new and exciting landscape reveals itself, with charming harbors and picturesque Southern Norway houses. Some sections include gravel roads, such as the old postal route from Tredal. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful beaches where you can stop for a refreshing swim.

Bike from Mandal to Kristiansand (53 km)

Today also brings many small climbs and descents. The stage begins on quieter roads along the coast. The route passes through several small towns and charming marinas. For the last 7 km into Kristiansand, the route follows a cycle path running parallel to the E39. Signage for National Cycle Route 1 ends in central Kristiansand, close to the railway station.
