Arctic Coast Cycling is an exciting adventure along the stunning coastline between Tromsø and Lofoten. Breathe in the crisp sea air as you embark on this refreshing journey of mountains, islands, beaches, and quaint fishing villages.
This thrilling 350 km journey from Tromsø to Svolvær in Lofoten, is the ultimate adventure for cycling enthusiasts, offering a stunning mix of dramatic coastlines, pristine sandy beaches, and charming fishing villages.
Starting in the lively city of Tromsø, you’ll ride through breathtaking fjord landscapes, before reaching the picturesque island of Sommarøy, where the open ocean meets the horizon. After a short ferry ride, the tour continues on Senja, Norway’s second-largest island. Here, the road along the west coast offers a spectacular route through rugged terrain, winding in and out of fjords, with steep climbs and thrilling descents.
From Senja, you take a ferry to Andøya, where new adventures await. This island features vast marshlands, dramatic peaks, and serene beaches. Take your time and explore the island before leaving for Vesterålen and Sortland.
On your second last day, reach Stokmarknes, where you can choose to either continue cycling towards Svolvær or take the scenic Hurtigruten coastal ferry. Both options give you great scenery. The journey concludes in Svolvær - the 'capital' of Lofoten.
Parts of this tour follow the renowned Norwegian Scenic Routes Senja and Andøya, providing some of the most breathtaking views in Norway. You can also extend your adventure by combining this tour with our cycling trips in Lofoten or Vesterålen.

The Tunnels on Senja Island
Senja is famous for its dramatic, steep mountains rising straight from the sea. As stunning as they are, cycling over them isn’t always an option. As one of our more experienced riders likes to say:
“It’s often easier to go through a mountain than over it.”
That’s where the tunnels come in.
When cycling on Senja, you will pass seven road tunnels, ranging from around 300 meters to nearly 1,900 meters in length. All tunnels are lit throughout, making them safer and more comfortable to ride through.
For your safety, each tunnel is equipped with a cyclist warning system. At the entrance, you’ll find a button you can press to activate warning lights, alerting drivers that cyclists are in the tunnel.
With a little preparation, the tunnels are a safe and practical part of cycling on Senja - and they make it possible to experience the island’s spectacular landscapes from the saddle.
