Discover Bergen and the fjords south of Bergen. The Hardangerfjord Express Boat takes you from Bergen to Rosendal through an adventurous nature of mountains and fjords.
From Rosendal you cycle in a varied and hilly landscape. You experience a little bit of Norway in miniature, with mountains, fjords, islands and lush hills. In the east, you can catch sight of the imposing glacier plateau, Folgefonna.
The daily stages include boat- and ferry trips, and ends in cozy towns, where you can experience authentic coastal- and fjord culture. We give you suggestions for great detours both along the fjord and in the archipelago.
In the evenings you are served delicious dinners, and in Bekkjarvik we can promise you some extraordinary food experiences, when award-winning chefs offer homemade food with ingredients from a pantry that is influenced by their surroundings - fresh, wild and beautiful.

The tour starts with an overnight stay in Bergen.

Sunnhordland is labelled as a sustainable destination with commitments to a more sustainable development of the environment, their unique culture, the local community, and last but not least - your well-being.

Program

  • This is a self-guided tour. This means going on your own and deciding your own pace. You can take a break, a shortcut or a detour whenever you want. The tour includes luggage transfer.

TOUR DATES 2023: Starts every Sunday from 11 June to 10 September

NUMBER OF DAYS: 6, Sunday - Friday

DISTANCE: 152 km + possible detours

LEVEL: Moderate. People who are in generally good condition, and have previous cycling experience. Must be prepared for all kinds of weather. Daily stages approx. 20-55 km
In bad weather with rain and/or wind, the trips become more strenuous.
For safety reasons, we recommend that at least two people ride together.

You can combine this tour with our tour in Hardanger from Bergen to Rosendal.

  • Day 1, Sunday: Individual arrival in Bergen

Bergen is the Gateway to the Fjords of Norway. As a UNESCO World Heritage City and a European City of Culture, the Bergen region has the ideal combination of nature, culture and exciting urban life all year around.

Accommodation at Thon Hotel Bristol Bergen

  • Day 2, Monday: Boat from Bergen to Rosendal

Pick up rental bikes in Bergen.
Go by the Hardangerfjord Express from Bergen to Rosendal in the afternoon. Depart at 16.30 and arrive in Rosendal at 18.25.

Accommodation at Rosendal Turisthotell (not a private bathroom)

  • Day 3, Tuesday: Bike to Årsnes, 10 km + ferry to Gjermundshamn + bike to Uggdal, 45 km

We recommend spending some time in Rosendal and visit the Manor House from 1665, surrounded by beautiful and historic grounds, including a Renaissance rose garden.
You can also visit the Folgefonn Centre, to learn about the Folgefonna National Park, the Hardangerfjord area and the environment in general.

From Rosendal, you will see some traffic. The road runs through lush farmlands, with lovely views of the Hardangerfjord. You take the ferry across the fjord and bike towards Uggdal. Known for its distinctive and personal atmosphere, Haaheim Gaard is a great place to spend the night. Growing their own herbs and vegetables in the garden, they will serve you a tasty meal based on local produce and seasonal ingredients.

    Accommodation at Haaheim Gaard

  • Day 4, Wednesday: Bike to Hodnanes, 18 km + ferry to Jektavik + bike to Leirvik, 14 km

We highly recommend biking a detour, via the beautiful village Onarhamn, towards Hodnanes. You then take the ferry across to Stord, and to Leirvik. Leirvik is a small city on the island of Stord, with a nice city centre and harbour.

    Accommodation at Stord Hotell

Bike from Leirvik via Fitjar to Sandvikvåg. Ferry to Husavik, and then a short bicycle tour to Bekkjarvik. This stage follows the signposts of the North Sea Route, which runs from Egersund to Bergen. Signposts only to Sandvikvåg. Some uphill from Leirvik to Sagvåg, then easy cycling through a lush cultural landscape. Bekkjarvik is an old trading station packed with coastal culture and with a fishery museum at Bekkjarvik Torg. Be ready for yet another fantastic food experience at Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri.
